During the Day

If you could be productive consistently every day, do you believe you would most likely have the ability to successfully accomplish your overall responsibilities, including your desired short-term and long-term goals?

Perhaps on more than one occasion, you may have experienced having had every intention to complete everything on your to-do list, yet by the end of the day it seemed like time got away from you, and you hardly got anything accomplished.

You may have had a recurring thought repeatedly nagging in the back of your mind, "I should have been more productive."

What does it mean to be productive?

By definition, productive means doing or achieving a lot; working hard and getting good results; causing or providing a good result or a large amount of something.

Perhaps there has been a time or two when you became disappointed with yourself for not being more productive, which may have resulted in not meeting an important deadline that ultimately backfired, and consequently, caused a missed opportunity.

Getting into the habit of consistently being productive during the day is attainable.  

Here are 4 simple steps on how to be productive during the day:


First things first, be reminded there are 24 hours in each day. Given that, decide what routine tasks will actually need to be accomplished on any specific day, and determine what steps will be needed in order to do so, along with estimating the time it will take to accomplish each task at hand.

For instance, you need to sleep, implement self-care, eat, work in your chosen job or career, have some alone time, spend time with family and friends, exercise, clean your home, and be involved in other important activities, projects, or endeavors. Determine what is priority within each category of your daily routine tasks designated for each day, and do what needs to be done first, accordingly.


Prepare the next day the night before by creating a to-do goals list to accomplish for the next day. By sticking with a routine schedule, you can become disciplined in completing your tasks. However, new or unexpected situations may occur that can to take precedence over normal daily tasks, which may have to be incorporated into your schedule temporarily until completed. 

A change in daily routine is okay, as changes often do take place in life, so there is no need to become frustrated or anxious if your normal daily schedule becomes interrupted Simply pick up from where you left off to get back on track with your normal routine daily tasks after an unexpected issue or crisis situation has been dealt with. 

Taking breaks and meditating during the day by focusing on your breathing and being grateful for all that you have can also be incorporated into your overall routine in order to relax and regroup when dealing with overwhelming daily tasks and unforeseen issues in-between. 


Determine how much time you need for adequate sleep each night. Then determine how long it takes to implement daily self-care, including showering/bathing, grooming, and getting dressed. Determine how much time is needed for all meals you eat during the day, including snacks. 

Determine your daily job/work schedule -- from start to finish -- and list the routine work tasks to complete daily within the allotted time frame. Determine the amount of alone time you need for yourself. Determine the amount of quality time you need to spend with certain family and friends. Determine the amount of time you need for other extra-curricular activities that are important to you. 

Overall, determine what is realistically doable and achievable for you toward being productive during the day, as you designate allotted time frames to commit to doing what is important for you at this current time in your life.


You can become easily overwhelmed when it seems like you have so much to do in a given day, especially if you're working on an assignment or big project. Do not become consumed with trying to get everything done by multi-tasking, or working working while also unnecessarily -- watching TV, being on social media, texting, emailing, talking on the phone -- at the expense of possibly sacrificing quality for quantity. Focus on doing one thing at a time. Take your time to do what needs to be done by giving your undivided attention to each task at hand, so you can appreciate and value your accomplishments at any given moment. Don't beat yourself up if you're unable to complete certain tasks in one day when you know you did all you could. 

For example, if you have to tackle cleaning out a room filled with stuff, do one section at a time. Start with one side of the room. Create piles -- one to keep -- one to sell -- one to donate. Get boxes, bags, and/or bins to utilize for designating your piles, and group items accordingly. 

Don't wear yourself out. Determine how much time you believe you need to spend on a project at a time, without neglecting your other daily responsibilities. Take small breaks in-between until you get to a good stopping point for the day. Pick up where you left off the next day, at the same time and within the same allotted time frame if you can.

However, if you're working on a project that has a deadline to meet, factor in the stages or phases of the project in order to determine how much time will be needed for overall completion. If you can temporarily forego doing any unrelated tasks on your to-do list in order to meet a project deadline, then do so accordingly. Focus on the end result of what you expect to accomplish as a motivator toward being productive. As a reminder though, take small breaks in-between to avoid overwhelm.


You can be more productive when you focus on doing one thing at a time by giving your undivided attention and doing all that you do to the best of your ability in order to achieve progress.

Be reminded of these 4 simple steps on how to be productive during the day:

1. Be clear about your daily responsibilities and priorities

2. Establish a daily to-do list the night before

3. Designate a time slot for each item on your daily to-do list

4. Take daily inspired action on tasks incrementallya

Ultimately, as you begin to achieve progress by being more productive daily, desired results will follow. You will experience a great sense of accomplishment that will enable you to have success in life, and the abundant lifestyle you desire.
