How To Bring Every Thought

Capture your thought for a moment...oftentimes we hear or say the phrase, “Actions speak louder than words.” Although this may be true, we must understand that ultimately our actions are a manifestation of our words, and our words are a manifestation of our thoughts. To put it simply, everything that happens in life begins with a thought. 

So, what is a thought? 

By definition, a thought is that which is reasoned, pondered over, meditated upon, believed, or that which is assumed.

Our thoughts create a spiral effect: Thoughts = Attitudes (expressions, countenance) = Words = Actions = Choices = Results (in what happens in our lives.)

Any thought constantly dwelt upon whether it is positive or negative, will eventually have an impact on our life and may affect the lives of others in return. 

For example, two siblings may grow up in the same household, however, they may dwell on different thoughts concerning their experiences. Perhaps they live in a dysfunctional home where they are being raised by a single parent who is an abusive alcoholic. There may be financial struggle, lack, disorder, clutter, and strife, with very little expressions of love among one another in the home. One sibling may constantly dwell on the negative, and as a result may be having trouble in school, often influenced by peer pressure concerning drugs, alcohol, and sex. This sibling may have a problem with authority and may often be jealous or envious of the success of others, especially concerning their sibling. This sibling may eventually grow up as an adult who often runs away from problems, never maintains stability in any aspect of life, blames others for their own shortcomings, often complains and brings up the past, and has no fulfillment in life.

The other sibling however, may dwell on the positive, excels academically in school and is a leader rather than a follower. Most likely, this sibling may have respect for authority and actually learns from the mistakes of others on what not to do and how not to be, while also learning from the successes of others on what to do and how to be, and is thankful to be created by God for a purpose. This sibling may grow up as an adult to become highly favored and blessed by the Lord, living a very prosperous life concerning education, career, family and society by blessing others in return.

Many times we may have thoughts of giving up when others speak wrongly of us or if it seems like we cannot seem to please anyone no matter what we do.

Perhaps others may not understand where you're coming from about what you're thinking or why, because they have not been through what you have in the exact measure or way, or choose not to try to view from your perspective. 

Perhaps you've had devastating experiences in life you may not care to think about. However, a "trigger" can occur, which can cause you think back on the past. This "trigger" can be unexpected, and your unintentional reaction to it can catch you [and others] by surprise. The result of your reaction can be detrimental -- perhaps affecting you emotionally and/or physically -- which can lead you to say or do things that may hinder your life's progress or affect the relationships you have with others.

Perhaps others may think differently than you and find it difficult to comprehend why you can't simply "get over it." 

Perhaps you may find it hard to concentrate on what you're doing and to properly think things through because your mind may be jumbled with a multitude of different thoughts about past experiences along with what is currently happening in various areas of your life.

With so many different thoughts in mind, it may be hard to know how to bring every thought captive.

Although our thoughts begin in the mind, there is another component or core aspect to bringing our thoughts captive, which can be easily overlooked, making it difficult to bring thoughts captive in the first place. Our spirit has the ability to dominate or overrule how we react to the thoughts in our mind. When we allow our spirit to overrule our mind to have right thoughts, we can make better choices about what we say and do, which can eventually lead to having a lasting, healthy state of mind. Therefore, keeping this in mind, having a biblical, spiritual perspective toward bringing every thought captive can be most effective. 

Here are 5 key points [scripture references] to keep in mind to help you bring every thought captive:


2 Corinthians 10:3-5

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

4 (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through the pulling down of strong holds;)

5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

The context in which this scripture was written was based upon what the apostle Paul experienced from the leaders in Corinth. He was constantly ridiculed because of his ministry. Despite how he was treated, despite the remarks, he did not dwell on negative thoughts. Instead, he remained meek in spirit and continued to do what God called him to do.

Also, do not forget about what Jesus went through. He was mocked, ridiculed, and persecuted for acknowledging to the Jews and Pharisees that He was the Messiah. It is a good thing that He did not dwell on negative thoughts to bow out of the seen before His appointed time. Otherwise, where would we all be?


Proverbs 23:7

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.

Many times we may think one thing and mean another. 

For example, we may find ourselves smiling in someone’s face, while thinking about how much we despise them at the same time. God knows our intentions, motives, and agendas because He knows our heart. God is not pleased with us when we choose to be hypocrites. He is pleased when our thoughts expressed through our words and actions are genuinely sincere toward others in how we represent Him.


Job 3:25

For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

Continually dwelling on thoughts of low self-worth, low self-esteem or fear of losing can actually cause us to lose what we have been blessed to have.

When our life isn't going as we would like, it can be easy to have unpleasant thoughts about ourselves. Perhaps you may think it will be easier to just throw in the towel and give up on your dreams, goals and endeavors. You may find yourself unintentionally torturing yourself verbally through self name calling whenever you make a mistake or an unwise choice.

You may find yourself reacting to a "trigger" that reminds you of the past, then everything can go downhill from there. 

For example, you may hear a song, watch a scene in a movie or run into someone while out and about that reminds you of how your spouse or partner wronged you. You may begin to rehash what they did to you in the past, even though you intended to have a wonderful time enjoying their company. Tempers may flare and harsh words may be spoken [to later regret] as you argue, fuss and fight. You may stop speaking for an extended period of time or revert into a pouting self-pity party, which can either stagnate, take you ten steps back or eventually end the relationship. 

All negative thoughts have to be replaced with positive thoughts. Thinking thoughts you can implement toward taking appropriate action steps that will lead to an effective, beneficial and healthy win-win resolve.  


Genesis 3:1-6

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Eve was seduced into sin by dwelling on thoughts to receive wisdom through another source other than from God. She took it upon herself to try to acquire that which she desired by going after it the wrong way.

We risk our morals and integrity when we go against God’s will and His word. We must remain constant and confident in adhering to and following through with His instruction, rather than be "fooled" into being led by thoughts and words of deception instigated or initiated by others or ourselves that can cause us to do otherwise.

Despite what you may have experienced, are experiencing or have yet to experience in life, you do not have to dwell on thoughts of greed, power, manipulation, jealousy, envy and control -- or even hurt, pain, hate, anger, bitterness, resentment, fear, guilt, shame, rejection or betrayal. 

As a believer in Jesus Christ who verbally confesses and accepts Him into their heart as personal Lord and Savior, one has the authority -- in the name of Jesus and the power through the blood of Jesus -- to bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ through the written word of God. Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly. It is not God’s will that any of us suffer, live in lack or remain in turmoil. It is God’s will for us to have unspeakable joy and fulfill our destiny in life in spite of our circumstances. Whatever you may be going through right now just remember that Jesus is always with you in spirit. He will never leave you nor forsake you.


Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 

Always remember the promises of God which are written in His word. In order to know the promises, you must know the word, so you must continually study the word to show yourself approved. Always remember to remain humble and meek in spirit when others speak against you or come against you in any way. No weapon formed against you shall prosper and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgement you shall condemn. You are the righteousness of God. You are a royal priesthood. You are a joint heir with Christ. You are the head and not the tail. You are above only and not beneath. You can do all things through Christ which strengthens you. You have the victory in Christ Jesus! 

No one is exempt from experiencing unpleasant circumstances in life. It's the thoughts we allow to penetrate our mind to dwell upon and react on that will determine any outcome. Whatever you want to achieve in life can be done according to the will of God as long as you keep your thoughts on Him.

Whenever you find yourself being reminded of an unpleasant past because of an unexpected "trigger" or thinking about how much you want to give someone a piece of your mind and say what's on the tip of your tongue, begin to immediately think about thoughts that bring you joy, pleasant thoughts from the past or present that will make you smile, thoughts that will inspire, motivate, encourage or empower you, and bring about peace of mind.

A Self-Analysis Regarding Your Personal Thoughts

1. When I wake up in the morning:

 a.) I think about how thankful I am to God for allowing me to wake up and see another day, for in doing so there is a purpose for me to fulfill, and I immediately hop out of bed. I get into God’s presence, meditate on His word, and allow Him to speak to my heart by way of the Holy Spirit to guide and lead me into all truth.


 b.) I think about how I could use several more hours of sleep so I hit the snooze button on the alarm and pull the covers over my head. I end up rushing to get myself together because I procrastinated and didn’t prepare myself or manage my time wisely to look forward to having a productive and successful day.

2. As I get up to start my day and look at myself in the mirror:

a.) I think about how fearfully and wonderfully I am made in the sight of God. I know that God knew me before I was even conceived in my mother’s womb, and that I am created in His image and likeness. I am no mistake, my existence is for a purpose. I live a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and interact well with others.


b.) I think about how much I am dissatisfied with my appearance, how I handle situations and everything that has to do with my life. I am always putting myself down and allow others to walk all over me like a “door mat.” I often wonder why I even exist. I feel like I am just taking up space. My lifestyle is totally chaotic with no order whatsoever. I have a hard time getting along with others, especially my immediate family.

3. As I interact with others:

 a.) I think about how pleasing I am in God’s sight. I know that I am a leader and a good role model, and I strive to do all that I can to be a blessing to others. Ultimately, my life in and of itself is a witness to others, and I make an effort to hear from God so He can lead me to another lost soul that I can win to Jesus Christ.


 b.) I think about what I believe others should do for me because of all that I have been without for so long. I often get consumed with myself and think about how I can get others to give to me or do for me simply because I deserve nothing but the best and no one else should “out shine” me. I will not do for anyone else until I have taken care of “me” first.

Based upon your self-analysis above, what thoughts are you primarily dwelling on at this time in your life?

What would be the greatest accomplishment for you to fulfill that would bring God glory? Think about where you are and think about where you want to be. Ask God to order your steps through His word and He will lead you there as long as you trust and believe. As you continually choose to focus on and act on God-given thoughts, you will be on the path to having a healthy mindset, and living the abundant lifestyle that awaits.
